Machine hits a bridge - level 3

Machine hits a bridge - level 3

The force of nature brings dramatic consequences.

Sand pump dredgers swept away in flooding caused by Typhoon Haiyan. Not in the Philippines, but in China’s Guang-xi Zhuang Autonomous Region, because these are reminders of the far-reaching effects of the super storm… bringing ferocious winds and torrential rain, but also the aftermath which is just as devastating.

The dredgers hit the bridge in Dongxing on Monday afternoon and remained stuck. It became just one structure damaged during the storm.

Chinese officials estimate economic losses at over 2 million yuan.

Haiyan has been classed as the strongest typhoon to hit the country this year, and during the preceding days brought death and destruction to the Philippines and Vietnam. Thousands have already died and a huge humanitarian aid effort is under way to try and reach millions of people who are homeless and without food and clean drinking water.

Difficult words: consequence (result), dredger (machine used for digging sand), typhoon (tropical storm), ferocious (dangerous), torrential rain (very heavy rain), aftermath (situation after a disaster), under way (has started).
