Auschwitz - level 3
Tomorrow marks exactly seventy years since the liberation of the Nazis’ Auschwitz death camp took place.
Drone footage now shows what the concentration camp looks like today.
The camp in Poland is now maintained as a World Heritage Site and is visited by thousands of tourists and survivors every year.
Auschwitz was the largest camp established by the Germans during World War Two. More than a million people, the vast majority of them Jews, died there between 1940, when it was built and 1945, when it was liberated by the Soviet army.
While the true horrors of the Holocaust are difficult to comprehend, this drone footage shows the sheer scale of the infrastructure at the Nazi regime’s death camps.
Difficult words: mark (to note something because it is important), liberation (the act of making something or someone free), footage (video), establish (to build), vast (large), majority (most of them), comprehend (to understand), sheer (shocking), scale (size), infrastructure (the way people organize something).
