Little polar bear in Ohio - level 3
Columbus Zoo's female polar bear cub has become somewhat of an online celebrity since she joined the zoo almost two months ago. Born weighing only half a pound (200 grams), the little girl has been looked after by zoo staff since her mother Aurora stopped caring for the cub.
Now 52 days later, with lots of regular feeds from staff, she weighs nearly 7 pounds (3 kilograms).
After staff took on the cub, she had to be incubated and the room she is in kept nice and warm. But keepers will soon have to start wrapping up as the cub grows and her temperature drops.
The cutie eats a special polar bear cub formula made up of kitten milk replacement, herring oil brought in on special order, and is fed 6 times a day.
Staff are pleased with how she is progressing but are taking things day by day.
Difficult words: cub (a young bear), wrap up (to finish doing something), cutie (somebody cute – beautiful), formula (a baby’s liquid food which is not the mother’s milk), herring (a small silvery fish).
