New Year speech - level 2
Just weeks after his powerful uncle was publicly killed, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has made a reference to him in a New Year's speech.
He didn’t mention his uncle by name but said that the government has become stronger after it was cleansed. The New Year speech was broadcast on state television. Kim also surprisingly called for better relations with South Korea, although he blamed the South for the problems between the two countries.
North and South Korea are officially at war, but they are not fighting because both countries are under a truce. The truce ended the Korean War in 1953.
Difficult words: cleanse (to make something completely clean), call for (ask for), truce (agreement between enemies to stop fighting).
