Lesson 1. Describing a recipe

This lesson presents a variety of words and expressions used for talking about cooking. Through listening, writing and speaking, students learn how to describe a recipe in detail.

   
 

Lesson 2. Chatting and small talk

This lesson introduces idioms and common social expressions used for gossiping, confiding in other people and making small talk. Students study the use of question tags in making conversation and role play a variety of situations using the expressions and structures from the lesson.

   
 

Lesson 3. Meeting people

This lesson teaches common expressions for meeting people. Through listening and role play the students learn how to introduce themselves and greet other people in both formal and informal situations. There are two animated videos which can be played as an interesting alternative to the audio dialogues in Ex5.

   
 

Lesson 4. Worry more, live longer

The theme of this lesson is health and stress. Students learn a variety of medical terms and read an article on how moderate stress can benefit people’s health according to recent scientific studies. In the grammar exercise, the use of cleft sentences beginning with ‘it’ (e.g. It’s the degree of stress that is important) is studied. Students also practise using the linking words and phrases to develop an argument. At the end of the lesson, there is a general discussion on health.

   
 

Lesson 5. Taxi!

The topic of this lesson is driving. Students read an article on the opinions of British travellers on taxi drivers around the world and learn vocabulary for describing driving technique as well as British and American English terms for different road features. The differences between the gerund and infinitive forms in two-verb structures are reviewed and practised. At the end of the lesson, students talk about taxi rides and driving in general.

   
 

Lesson 6. Cyber crime

The theme of this lesson is Internet crime. Students study words and expressions related to the topic and read an article on the different types of scams and crimes that are being committed on the Internet. The passive voice is reviewed and practised. At the end of the lesson, students discuss what measures they can take to avoid becoming victims of online scams. This worksheet is particularly suitable for IT professionals or students interested in computing.

   
 

Lesson 7. A changing world

The lesson is based on an article about a Polish railway worker who regained consciousness after 19 years in a coma to discover how much his country had changed since the time of his accident in 1988. Vocabulary related to health and politics is studied, and there is a review of the past and present tenses used when giving biographical information about someone. At the end of the lesson, students talk about changes in their own countries’ recent history.

   
 

Lesson 8. Google gets record fine

Students read about the fine that Google has received for unfairly promoting its internet shopping service. Exercises focus on reading and understanding, vocabulary and the 'to + infinitive' verb structure. There are also speaking activities for students to discuss the article and shopping on the internet.

   
 

Lesson 9. The UK election

In this lesson, students read about the results of the recent UK general election, and what they mean for Brexit. Activities focus on reading, speaking and understanding, plus key vocabulary and collocations.

   
 

Lesson 10. Cyber attack affects thousands

In this lesson students read about the recent cyber-attack that has affected many people around the world. Exercises focus on computer vocabulary, reading and speaking.

   
 

Lesson 11. Macron wins French election

This lesson continues the theme of the French presidential election. Students read an article about the final result and the challenges that the new president faces. Extra activities link this worksheet and ‘The fight to be French president.’

   
 

Lesson 12. The fight to be French president

This lesson focuses on the French presidential election and the results from the first round. Students read about the two candidates, Marine Le Pen and Emmanuel Macron, and their battle for the presidency.

   
 

Lesson 13. Average person to live more than 90 years

Students read about how life expectancy in many countries is increasing, and some of the surprising results of the research. The worksheet focuses on comprehension, vocabulary and speaking.

   
 

Lesson 14. Rules for robots get closer

Students read about plans to make rules for robots in the future, and the things we should be prepared for when robots become part of our society. The worksheet focuses on vocabulary, comprehension and speaking.

Students read about the life and recent death of Cuba's former president, Fidel Castro. The worksheet focuses on reading comprehension, vocabulary development and speaking.

   
 

Lesson 16. Trump wins US election

This lesson focuses on Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential elections. Students read about and discuss how and why Trump won the race.

   
 

Lesson 17. Penguin goes missing

Students read about an recent incident at an African marine park, where two students stole and released a male penguin into the wild. The worksheet focuses on comprehension, vocabulary work and speaking.

   
 

Lesson 18. Forest fires in Southern Europe

Students read about the major forest fires which affected parts of Spain, France and Portugal last week. The intermediate and upper intermediate worksheet versions include a grammar activity on passive structures.

   
 

Lesson 19. Pokemon Go Makers Face Court

In this lesson, students read about a recent lawsuit against the makers of the popular game Pokemon Go over players trespassing on private property.
